Definition: The elapsed time from when a customer's call starts ringing to when it's answered. Modern best-in-class is under 2 seconds; the threshold for caller abandonment is approximately 11 seconds.

Pickup time (sometimes called "answer time" or "speed to answer") measures how long a customer waits between the start of ringing and someone (or something) picking up the call. It is the most critical phone-handling metric in 2026 because customer abandonment behavior has tightened.

Live answering services typically advertise 15-second target pickup times and achieve 8-25 second averages depending on call volume in their queue.
