Click-to-Call
Category: SEO.
Also known as: Click-to-dial, Tap-to-call.
Definition: A direct phone-call link from a digital surface (website, ad, Google Business Profile) that initiates a call when tapped. Dominant inbound channel for local service businesses.
Click-to-call is the digital interaction where a user taps a phone number link on a website, mobile ad, search result, or Google Business Profile listing to initiate a phone call directly. On mobile devices, the tap launches the dialer with the number pre-filled, requiring only a confirm-tap to complete the call.
For local service businesses, click-to-call is typically the dominant inbound channel:
- Google Business Profile: The "Call" button on the GBP card on mobile is the single highest-volume inbound channel for most local businesses.
- Google Ads (mobile): Call extensions on local search ads drive direct calls.
- Website headers: Phone numbers in website headers and contact pages drive calls when visitors are ready to book.
- Mobile organic search: Phone numbers in local pack listings are click-to-call enabled.
Click-to-call has a critical SEO ranking implication: Google can see whether the call connected and roughly how long it lasted, and uses that data as a local ranking input. Listings with high call-connection rates and longer call durations rank better in the local pack. Listings whose calls frequently fail to connect drop in rankings over time.
This means phone-answering performance is functionally a local SEO factor, even though it's typically managed by operations rather than marketing teams.
The implementation is HTML's "tel:" URL scheme — for example, Call Now. Modern websites should ensure phone numbers are universally formatted as click-to-call links rather than plain text.
