Definition: The map-and-listings block that appears at the top of Google search results for queries with local intent. Typically shows three businesses; the top spot drives 30-45% of clicks for the query.

The local pack (sometimes called the "3-pack" or "map pack") is the block of three business listings, accompanied by a map, that appears near the top of Google search results when the query has local intent. Examples of triggering queries: "plumber near me," "hvac repair dallas," "best dentist columbus oh."

The local pack is the most valuable real estate in local search because:

Local pack rankings are determined by three Google-stated factors: relevance (does the business profile match the query), distance (how close is the business to the searcher), and prominence (how established is the business). Prominence inputs include reviews, citations, GBP completeness, and — critically — call-engagement signals.

Phone-answering performance is a local pack ranking factor. Profiles whose calls frequently fail to connect drop in rankings over months as Google treats failed connections as a negative engagement signal. Profiles with high pickup rates and substantive call durations rise.

This creates an under-recognized loop: the better your phone-answering, the higher your local pack ranking, the more calls you receive, which (if continued to be answered well) further reinforces the ranking. Conversely, poor phone-answering compounds into ranking decline over time.
